I have just been out and it is snowing lightly. Heavy snow is forecast overnight.

I noticed a lack of gritting, especially on the ring-road from Victory roundabout to Morrisons and the fire station which I would have expected to be gritted as it is a major route and used by the emergency services. I know it is complicated and the grit must not go down too early or the rain washes it away but it need to be gritted before the snow settles. Lets hope the gritters make it round tonight.

It drives me mad that the UK has to grind to a halt because of snow. It is not like we haven't had it before but I expect tomorrow to be like a ghost ship at work as employees can't make it in because roads are not gritted or schools are shut. Isn't Britain meant to be famous for spirit of the blitz? How about spirit of the snow? Or is it just a good excuse to use the last Friday before Christmas to do a little extra Christmas shopping?
I saw the gritter lorry as we drove home from the ice rink so I guess there out there and may be out for much of the night. Rain wrong type, wrong type of leaves etc etc is it only in this country we are told such excuses?

This argument comes out every time. The problem is we dont have enough snow. People would soon start moaning about waste if we spent a fortune just in case it snows. Some years we get barely any in the south.

Therefore people aren't used to driving in it nor are their cars prepared with snow chains. Therefore more people get stuck or have accidents, hopefully not serious.

Dont travel if you dont have to - mind you defining "dont have to" is tricky.
Well just to defend the Borough / County / Highways, I drove 20 miles this morning and apart from my cul-de-sac all the roads were clear. In fact so many drivers had decided not to even bother I would go as far as to say that the journey was easier than normal.

The kids' school is still shut though!
Good to hear! I'm absolutely terrified about having to drive in it. Only driven in it once before, and that was with the safety of a driving instructer. Not that we got that far as the roads were all jammed.

With respect Shell, that scares me - that there are drivers out there who are terrified yet still may drive despite an admission that they may not be able to cope with the conditions.

Sorry, but if anyone has concerns on their own ability they should perhaps think about other means of travel.
I saw the gritters heading up Worthing road from the Fire station roundabout. I should think any earlier people would be complaining about their cars being sprayed with grit.

My road is snow covered but all other routes to the station were slush, good work Mr Gritter man you made my journey a little easier.
Colin ol'chap, if you're working two 'til ten why are you leaving at half past nine? ;-)

What he said.

An excellent job was done in my opinion. Estate roads were bad but a bit of delicate driving and you are through it in no time. Agree with Non-stick post too.
