The sky over Basingstoke will be lit up in a myriad of colours on 5 November, courtesy of the Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane.

The annual Mayor’s firework display will this year be held on Wednesday 5 November at the War Memorial Park. Disabled parking will be available at Crossborough Hill.

The music played will reflect this year’s theme of ‘heroes and villains’. Superhero music such as the Superman, Batman and Spiderman theme tunes will feature. Additional entertainments include a funfair and a 2TEN FM roadshow.

The gates will open at 6pm and the fireworks display is scheduled to begin at approximately 7.30pm.

The proceeds from the event will go towards the Mayor’s Charity Appeal 2008/9. Each Mayor chooses the charities to support during his or her year in office. This year’s charities are Macmillan Cancer Support, the National Association for Colitis and Crohn’s Disease, and Naomi House.

Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane Cllr George Hood said: “The annual Firework Fiesta is always a wonderful family event. Why not bring your friends and family along and come and join in the fun? You’ll thoroughly enjoy the organised display and other bonfire night festivities, plus you’ll also be helping local charities.”

Tickets will be on sale at the payments hall, in the Parklands Building at the council’s offices in London Road, Basingstoke, The Sports Centre, and the Hampshire County Information Centre next to the Library. It will also be possible to buy tickets online via http://www.basingstoke.gov.uk/fireworks and through the council’s Contact Centre on 01256 844844. Payments via Credit Card are acceptable.

People who buy tickets in advance will be able to avoid the queues because certain gates will be set aside solely for their use. Further details also online.

Adults tickets will cost £6 when bought in advance and £7 if purchased at the gate on the night of the event. Children’s tickets cost £3 when bought in advance and cost £4 on the night. Family tickets bought in advance will cost £15 and £18 when purchased on the night.

On Thursday 6 November, anyone who has bought a £7 armband will be able to ride all the adult rides on the funfair as many times as they wish without further payment. Kiddies rides will cost £1 per ride.

The funfair information line is 07836 226464.

More information about the whole event can be found at http://www.basingstoke.gov.uk/fireworks

But more amazingly - it will be held on Bonfire Night!!!!

We may go elsewhere this year as this one always starts late, the audio soundtrack is way toooooo loud and 210FM are unbearable

The too loud and the 210FM unbearability is the reason I stand outside by the Registry Office and watch. Good view, much less appalling racket.
As long as they start it it the "TIME STATED" it will be okay, there were people there last year practically suffering with Hypothermia due to the wait to get it going, it should be if you ain't there at kick off tough.
Last yeas approx was approx 8.35 when it go.
Even my brass monkeys went home. :-)

Nothing to do with not buying a ticket then?

I do agree about starting on time. I usually aim to get there about half an hour late but then you hear odd fireworks going off and worry that is it starting. I would be good if they could actually start at the time published for once. I don't mind at the balloon festival but it is too cold to be hanging around in November.

TBH I wouldn't mind buying a ticket for the firework show, but the bloody awful racket of the 210FM DJ puts me right off going inside. It's been the same at the 'nightglows' I've been too, a good event spoilt by too bloody loud awful DJ/music.

Dreadful 210 'roadshow' noise shouting, screaming and mundane moronic banter definitely spoils the balloon weekend and other events in the park. Why 210 why not the local station Kestral?

I've never been to the Basingstoke firework show I usually head for London either Wandsworth or Blackheath great fireworks and music and totally free. If you are really a firework freak you can go to free displays for days on end, as the boroughs often have them at different times and days. You even get a big bonfire at the Wandsworth one, long since gone at most displays.

I think the principle of a free firework shows have some merit the thinking is that people are more likely to attend the free controlled displays and thus reduce the less controlled and possible unsafe private displays.

I've often wondered why we don't have KestrelFM at events like this too. Come on Basingstoke, use LOCAL radio!
I don't mind paying as it raises money for charity. I tend to sit just inside. There are benches by the gate to the council office or there are tables and chair by the various food stalls and the music is not unbearable from there.

I do agree that it is too loud though. Generally I do think that there is a obsession with playing music as loud as possible. I can't count the times that I have sat in a pub and shouted over the loud jukebox music or had to leave/sit outside because they have a band on. Why on earth does music have to be so loud? OMG, I guess I am getting old. Sad
