That is so funny - said to myself this morning i wondered how long it would be before someone posts the predictable thread about gritting...and sure enough.
Bottom line....everyone is getting into work. Weather has caught everyone by surprise. This weather was not predicted to come this far south and if everyone was a little bit more patient etc then there would not be a problem.
As for gritting....lots of it where i am.

Wonder how effective the griiting would have been seeing as it started out as rain before turning to snow. Even by modern standards weather forecasting is hit and miss. We get caught out in the UK because this sort of weather is rare. All those moaning about the lack of gritters would soon moan about the increase in tax to pay for all the gritting, etc just in case it snows.
Roads seemed pretty clear apart from the usual suspects (mine). My beef in all this is they dont salt the pavements. I wonder how many falls we've had this morning.

It's not as if we had a foot or two of snow. Yes it was icy, all that should mean to any driver is that you journey will take longer, reduce your speed and increase your braking distance. It’s a fact that each year we get icy roads and we should, as drivers, know how to drive when the road conditions are less than perfect.
Anyone who has an accident when the roads are icy shouldn’t blame the lack of gritting but look closer to home and realise than many more drivers have used that piece of road prior to them and not lost control of their car.

True.... but the road to Newbury was closed because all the trucks were sliding back down the hill!
I also saw a car crashed on the way to work, and there were some accidents near the Hospital too, which caused major delays for everyone.
It just takes one person... to cause major delays! And it all could have been avoided if the gritters were out on the road doing their job. (as well as those drivers concerned being better at the art of driving a car!

I was out last night and there were gritters out along the A30, Hatch Warren and Popley, the snow last night was very slushy so as another poster said it would have been washed away.
Took an hour this morning to get to work (normally only 30 mins) but Monday it took me 50 mins to drive a mile thanks to a load of protesters outside AWE...
A339 - two accidents, one car in a ditch and a four car pile up as well. LOADS and LOADS of drivers on mobiles and tail-gating. The problems along Worting Road, Roman Road is that no-one would allow the lorries/buses through the railway bridge, causing the backlog of traffic along Roman Road and the B3400.

The roads were actually clear in parts - gritting does not prevent solid clumps of ice forming on the road in freezing temperatures.
Driving error is the route cause of the problem. Quotes of Lorries sliding down the hill is an exaggeration.
