Mothers Day
just a quick reminder, mothers day is 14th March (next sunday).

Who here thinks mothers day is just another commercial exercise to get us muppets to go and and spend our cash?

So how do you see mothers day, what is the purpose of it? are you just saying thank you for being a great mum and shouldn't we be doing that all year round?

RE: Mothers Day
I like the idea of a special day. I agree that we should say thank you to mum's every day but how many people really bother.

Personally, it prompts me to take flowers to my mother's grave, something which I used to do regularly but which has become less frequent over the years.

RE: Mothers Day
I have to be honest I dislike the whole Mothers/fathers day thing, the majority of us choose to become parents so why should we have a day named after us.

I don't expect anything from my daughter on Fathers day but I get a gift. However this year I am making a card with my daughter and buying my wife a gift, my little girl being only a year old doesn't have an income of her own yet so I have to foot the bill Smile My wife and I realise how special we are every morning when our daughter wakes us at 5.30 whether we need to be up or not. We take it in turns to have a lay in at the weekend so what will be different about this weekend.... well someone decided for us who it is that gets the lay in on Sunday.

So my opinion although I have given into the pressure is as follows "It@s all commercial B*llocks and I feel ripped off"

Anyway Happy Mothers day for Sunday all the same.

Yep that's exactly how I feel but what can we do to break out of this without having the guilt trip that goes with it???

RE: Mothers Day
Don't break it because that leaves the mother hurt and offended. Just opt out of the commercialism - make your own card and make the effort with something that you would buy anyway, perhaps cook the dinner or breakfast in bed.

RE: Mothers Day
Contrary to what some might think, Mother's Day is not a commercial invention devised by big business, but in this country goes back centuries and is always celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent. Most countries, including the US, have Mother's Day on a fixed date in May. Nearly everyone calls it Mother's Day now, although the correct title is Mothering Sunday.

The tradition to give a card and flowers goes back a long time in this country. It has been commercialised, but then so has Easter and Christmas. However, in my view, it is not how much money you spend, but the thought that counts.

People believe what they want to believe.
