The sky over Basingstoke will be lit up in a myriad of colours on 5 November, courtesy of the Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane.

The annual Mayor’s firework display will this year be held on Wednesday 5 November at the War Memorial Park. Disabled parking will be available at Crossborough Hill.

The music played will reflect this year’s theme of ‘heroes and villains’. Superhero music such as the Superman, Batman and Spiderman theme tunes will feature. Additional entertainments include a funfair and a 2TEN FM roadshow.

The gates will open at 6pm and the fireworks display is scheduled to begin at approximately 7.30pm.

The proceeds from the event will go towards the Mayor’s Charity Appeal 2008/9. Each Mayor chooses the charities to support during his or her year in office. This year’s charities are Macmillan Cancer Support, the National Association for Colitis and Crohn’s Disease, and Naomi House.

Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane Cllr George Hood said: “The annual Firework Fiesta is always a wonderful family event. Why not bring your friends and family along and come and join in the fun? You’ll thoroughly enjoy the organised display and other bonfire night festivities, plus you’ll also be helping local charities.”

Tickets will be on sale at the payments hall, in the Parklands Building at the council’s offices in London Road, Basingstoke, The Sports Centre, and the Hampshire County Information Centre next to the Library. It will also be possible to buy tickets online via http://www.basingstoke.gov.uk/fireworks and through the council’s Contact Centre on 01256 844844. Payments via Credit Card are acceptable.

People who buy tickets in advance will be able to avoid the queues because certain gates will be set aside solely for their use. Further details also online.

Adults tickets will cost £6 when bought in advance and £7 if purchased at the gate on the night of the event. Children’s tickets cost £3 when bought in advance and cost £4 on the night. Family tickets bought in advance will cost £15 and £18 when purchased on the night.

On Thursday 6 November, anyone who has bought a £7 armband will be able to ride all the adult rides on the funfair as many times as they wish without further payment. Kiddies rides will cost £1 per ride.

The funfair information line is 07836 226464.

More information about the whole event can be found at http://www.basingstoke.gov.uk/fireworks

Now, although not really my cup of tea, i was curious. What I saw absolutely appalled me. the idea is you CUT your pets claws down to the quick so you can put these plastic covers on, eliminating furniture/yourself being scratched. Good idea maybe?
ABSOLUTELY NOT
Maybe it's just me, but the whole idea of leaving a cat defensless without the use of it's claws, is down-right cruel.

I was totally disgusted to see a story on the BBC news about the behaviour of the police in Wales.

An officer had taken to parking his police van outside his house with 2 wheels on the pavement preventing a wheelchair bound neighbour from getting by. His defence - he owned the pavement as it was a private road! Well, maybe he did but I bet it is still a public right of way that should not be blocked. Even if he owned it, how heartless is it to block in a disabled neighbour. Vehicles should be parked on the road, not the pavement.

In the ensuing row, the policeman alleged that the disabled man slapped his face twice so he arrested him for a public order offence. How??? How on earth could a man in a wheelchair slap the face of a policeman standing up? Was the policeman exceptionally short or was he leaning into the man's personal space?

The scenes of the man being man-handled into the police van are disgusting. Disabled people should be arrested if they commit a crime but this should be done with respect and dignity, not pulling them about because they cannot stand.

To me this seems an abuse of power. There are images of the badly parked police van and the man-handling of the disabled man during his arrest. I doubt any action will be taken. The uniform should signify exemplary behaviour and respect for others and this officer is a disgrace.
In particular something like and old peoples club where they make stuff for various charities, or a self-help group for the mentaly-handicapped/stroke victims etc.etc.
I was wondering if anyone knew of such a group? The main thing she wants is for it to be put to good use where it can help people, as opposed to someone having it to sell on.
What if, at this very moment, you are living up to your full potential?
Take the antidote repeatedly until WORK has been completely eliminated from your system.

I’m not really in to celebrity but did notice that Paul Newman had died aged 83 I guess many of us enjoyed his films and I guess many of us will be revisiting these films over the next few months. Its is said he shunned the glitzy Hollywood lifestyle and the trappings of fame. Anyone that was on Presidents Nixon's ‘enemy list’ was likely to get my vote.

What interested me most however was the unique way he made money for charity I had been aware for a long time of a salad dressing brandishing his face on the bottle with the brand name of Newman's Own.

Apparently he enjoyed making salad dressings for himself and his friends. Out of this in the early eighties ‘Newman's Own’ brand salad dressings was developed, he agreed that his name and face could be used if all the profits went to charity this year alone around £13,000,000 will be given away.

Have a look at the web-site in my opinion unlike many, he is a celebrity worth celebrating not only for his entertaining films, but for what he stood for and his philanthropy.

What's happened to the promoters and performers that used to post in this section. We used to be kept informed of local stuff and it worked. I and others often went to the events and venues promoted in this section.

I'm not sure if its laziness on my behalf or its just hard to find information on whats on in Basingstoke. I haven't been to much in Basingstoke for a while. I'm still going out when I can afford it ( credit crunch blues ) but for some reason find myself travelling to other towns.

Let hope we can get this section going again! if you want an audience it may be worth it

A week back I went to see Russel Howard at the Anvil now I’m told he’s very funny however at the Anvil it was hard to tell as it was very difficult to follow 50%+ of what he said.

I thought it must be me, you know age related hearing loss and Tinnitus, on leaving my companion remarked she had problems too. At least it was clear I had not suffered a sense of humour failure. Ironically others were overheard complaining they had missed a lot too.

Has anyone else had this problem at the Anvil I have never been impressed with the venues acoustics at music events but it's passable but this was the first one-man show I’ve been too in the main auditorium.

I will think twice about going again. Did I complain ? well no as it was a treat for my birthday and so not my place and I didn't purchase the tickets.

Was this a one off ? How do others feel about the Anvil and the shows they have seen / heard there.

What do you always say that gives you away as and Old Skool Basingstoker.... my old man who moved down from Kent about 18 years ago looks blank when I talk about:

The Lido (not the Leisure park)

The Tech College (not BCOT as it is now known)

the Owen and Owen carpark (now known as the Anvil carpark).

He does remember the days before the M3 and he and his family had to leave Kent at about 3 in the morning to go to Bournemouth, going through Guildford on the A30 - when we used to go the over way to visit family in Sittingbourne it used to take an age and we always had the "who can spot the AA building first" game in the back of the car as kids

So then who will win the premiership then? Will Spurs go down (sorry 40 licks couldn't resist). Rangers or Celtic for the SPL?

Reading to come up? I hope so.

Should Fergie have retired when JT fell over and gone out on a high?

Should we have a Team GB for London 2012? I would love to see it happen as a one off but it won't happen.

Are you worried about all the clubs being sold to overseas owners? I am I think Roman will get bored in a couple of years and bugger off and we're end up like Leeds.

How many dodgy pens in that diver from Portugal gonna win this season?

In god's name sort it out. This store is sadly deterioating and fast. Can they not get any staff in anymore? I am not joking when i say that the last 3 nights i have been there i have continually witness...

1. Checkouts 6 deep with customers and the small items one 16 deep. Yes i know exactly because i waited so long that i counted!
2. Only 6 out of 24 checkouts open.
3. Basic food produce not on the shelves anymore.
4. Continual large congregation of kids in and out of the doorway.
5. No baskets or trollies.

I will add to this list as i go on. This has the makings of a new look Robert Grieg. I would go elsewhere if it was not so damn convenient but the time it took me last night to get the basics i could of gone to the Hypermarket in Havant and back in time before i would of been served.

Roll on new Tesco's at this part of town!!
