RE: Snow
the council are ment to clear footpaths, if you fall and as so many have they all have a right to claim against the council if it was on unreated footpaths. the council know this to well but the manpower in clearing the miles of footpaths in basingstoke it must be cost effective to pay damages to people that do fall on paths.

............... To be fair though, they did utilise the bin men to grit paved areas by bus stops (this has certainly taken place in Popley).
The bin men arn`t council workers tho they work for the subcontractors who the council employ to empty the bins.

PS. we`ve had no problems with bins being emptied during the bad weather out at Sherfield.
Most non main roads out here are still snow and ice covered

I don`t do humour.
Never give up lifes to short.

In Whitchurch a trailer was borrowed off a local trader.
You will need 'sharp sand' not the fine variety used in sandpits.

It is not pointless getting it if the snow has gone.
If the snow is disappearing (which it is) wait until you can obtain a salt/grit mix. Every contributor could then have a bucket or two ready for the next load of snow and ice - even if its next year. Being prepared is always better until waiting until it snows before getting the salt.

You could also look into getting a salt bin. Ask you local Councillor to get on the case.

MORE SALT BINS
Thanks keepontriking. It would be a case of where to keep the sand until next time. As flats don't have gardens just doors opening on to the street, it would fall entirely to those of us with houses and I don't want a tonne of sand in my garden as I have a dog but if it isn't secure you can bet someone will take it when it snows.

I phoned round B&Q and Wickes. Neither deliver and both are out of stock. I haven't tried homebase as they wouldn't answer their phone.

The problem is that it has just started to snow and is forecast to snow on-and-off for the next 24 hours. Any idea what happens if I put sand down (assuming I can get some) and it snows? Does it just snow on top of it? Or could I put sand on top of the snow without clearing it? My issue is that I can only shovel snow in the evenings as I work all day and doing the minimum necessary to get the car out is all I can face in the mornings.

If public transport was reliable, I wouldn't have to drive my son to work but once again, it lets me down in my hour of need......need to not get up so early and keep being late for work driving him there and back!

I love snow. It is falling in tiny flakes right now and cheering me up. Snow is so much easier to drive and walk through than ice and nothing beats being the first to walk through fresh snow.

It is just a pity that so little is done by the council to grit roads and pavements. I am sure more could be done manually so there is no need to buy rarely used equipment and salt keep so why not stock up for 10 years ahead so it is there if there is more snow than expected?

RE: Snow
Just seen a taxi minibus fail to get up my road. It was still like a skating rink when I came home today. the newly-laid snow seems to have had a disaterous effect on it Sad

Though on a plus side.. the snow-ball I threw early that went way off target was hilarious as it hit Common right on the back off the neck Big Grin

Today, give a stranger one of your smiles. It might be the only sunshine he sees all day.

Here we go again....

School closures, ungritted roads, accidents here there & everywhere.

Uni wants us to go in for lectures, despite the local radio there saying road conditions are treacherous and cars are skidding for metres (that can be dependant on drivers skill or lack thereof though). Have emailed them and told them to not be ridiculous and just re-schedule lectures.

If its a group of people (which is what you were suggesting) all you need is a bucket full each. Stick it under the stairs, in a shed, in the attic.

Problem gone away.
You could set up the scheme now.

RE: Snow
I'll have a look into it keepontriking. The trouble is that most neighbours live in flats with no communal areas, front doors opening on to the street, no shed, no attic and stairs straight up from the front door into their living room. Also at the moment, maybe half the neighbours would be interested. By next week when the snow clears, it will drop to 10%. Without the weeks of snow, sitting at home and having a day off work at the slightest flake of snow seems more appealing to some.

Would a bucket full each be enough? I estimated the equivalent of 1 grit bin full per day so a tonne would not last a week. Ideally, I just want it dumped at the top of the road for spreading down the road which is why delivery on the day it is needed would be ideal. I might lobby our councillor about permission to just dump it there until it does snow again as I am sure that it will, next year if not this year.

Sorry to repeat the question but does anyone know when the sand should be put down? When snow starts falling to prevent it? On top of the snow? Or would we need to clear the snow first?
