RE: Is it safe?
OK, I timed one today and it took 3 minutes 50 seconds to go overhead, slightly quicker than I estimated but nonetheless a lot longer than the few seconds that basingstokeroyal posted that they took to go over his house.

I am still no further forward with how on earth I can move away from the chinook noise, something that I seriously intend to do in a year of so.

Good that no-one was killed and the pilot's injuries are not life threatening but no mention of who or what was on the ground below should they have crashed. I do wonder how safe our skies are.

As the accident happened over Crete 1684 miles away I dont think that this accident has affected the safety of our skies at all.

I only came across this site yesterday and browsed the comments with great interest. At first I thought that comments were generally polite and thoughtful, (especially yours).
I then came upon this thread and was massively disappointed by the vitriol poured out against you, all totally unjustified. I might not agree with the level of your concern about the direct dangers from these flying monstrosities, but your personal view is as valid, and deserving of respect, as any. I am truly worried over the tunnel vision evident and a little surprised that the moderator has not stepped in to chop the personal abuse against you. Don't move away. Your lack of aggression is a great asset and your enthusiasm about what is going on around us is to be applauded. (I don't expect to come anywhere near your level of contribution - I type too slowly).

RE: Is it safe?
Hello and welcome Chineham Ian.

Thanks for the comments. Most people on this site are polite most of the time. Don't let a few comments put you off. I don't expect everyone to share my views; that's democracy and freedom of speech. Seamatt does step in if things get out of hand but there would be no-one left on the site if everyone who argues for a different opinion was banned. Their views are just as valid as mine.

Looking forward to your contributions to the site. My high post count only means that I have been here a long time. Posts per day are a better indicator and you have already beaten my 2 point something-or-other. Maybe that is a better target to aim for.

hi chinehamian and welcome to the forum.

It's very difficult to gauge when and when not to intervene but I have learnt through experience that it is impossible to please everybody, I will often wait for people to report a post or wait until a thread is going off the rails and in this instance I know Della's attitude towards posts that are aimed at her. You also have to keep in mind that it is very easy to kill a thread by over moderating.

I'm sure you will come up against individuals on any forum that have either a political, religious or personal agendas, I do try and keep things contained and I will admit I don't always get it right but I hope this doesn't put you off using the site.

Can't please all the people all the time. You do your best, that's all that counts in my book Smile

Today, give a stranger one of your smiles. It might be the only sunshine he sees all day.

RE: Is it safe?
I agree - I've commented elsewhere that if we were all sitting in a B/stoke cafe and discussing this same topic the British face to face politeness factor would be there. the fact that we can come here with no identity I think brings out sometimes the worst in us. If we all took a deep breath and imagined we were discussing things face to face in a public venue perhaps we'd suddenly become ultra-polite?

hiding behind avatars and funny images might protect our own identity and privacy but sometimes turns us into monsters!

Evil exists when good men/women remain silent

RE: Is it safe?
Sorry seamatt, I could have been more supportive posting above. I should make clear that I have reported general offensive posts and spam but I have never reported any post for moderation due to comments about me and I have let it be known that I would never ask for someone to be banned just for criticising me. Although I will respond, I try to do so politely so that the thread does not degenerate into an argument that needs to be moderated. In other words, I think your moderating is what makes this forum so good.

I know some of my views are controversial. Sometimes it feels like I am one lone voice trying to get our troops out of Afghanistan and other places where we are fighting for oil and wealth and political friendship instead of human rights while the rest of the world lauds them as heroes and I know that such opinions are likely to attract opposition so it would not be fair to complain when the expected opposition arrives.

Zenaphobia, I agree that anonymity can lead to some people sometimes posting things that they would not say unless anonymous. We used to have monthly meets where anyone posting could meet up and I think it did help people to get on better knowing we would be face-to-face soon.
