...um, don't forget that the original question was about the local elections, so moans about "this poxy [L]abour government" aren't particularly relevant, but still...

People / Voters do use the the locals to send governments a message / bloody nose . And local politics is still based around the national party political system. |

RE: Am I bovvered? Poll
Personally I don't support the removal of the 10p tax band as it is part of a benefit/taxation system that discriminates against people on the grounds of age, which seems in practice only to be illegal on the grounds of old age.
When the lowest rate of income tax was removed, anyone with children, who was disabled or a carer, a pensioner, a student or over 25 and working full time would be better off as pension/student grant/tax credit rates increased by more than was lost for the 10p tax band. The people who are hit at the over 25s who work less than 16 hours per week, if the reason for working short hours is not because they are studying or caring for children or someone disabled or if they themselves are disabled. Presumably this might include married women who work part time, for example, because their husbands earn enough and so they don't need to work full time. I have no issue with tax being raised from low earners in this group. However when it comes to people who work full time, people under 25 who are not students or disabled and do not have children do not get the same tax credit advantage as the over 25s. Therefore, of people in this group in very low paid jobs, those over 25 will be better off whereas those under 25 will be worse off. This is blatant age discrimination. My main gripe is with the tax credit laws that discriminate based on age as I don't see why a younger person should be worse off based purely on their age. |

RE: Am I bovvered? Poll
3 days to go and I've yet to have anyone knock on my door asking me for my vote and only one piece of party info through my letter box, and the candidates getting as apathetic as the voters?

RE: Am I bovvered? Poll
Similar here, one flyer through the door from the Tories and nobody knocking.
I'm new to the area so would have been easy to win over! |

RE: Am I bovvered? Poll
I have had 2 from the Labour party but nothing from any other party and no-one knocking at my door, though I am out all day so maybe they knock in the daytime.
To be honest, most unsolicited callers knock at an inconvenient time like just as I am rushing out the door to get to work so I am quite happy that no-one has knocked. I would like more leaflets though. 2 days to go and I don't know the stance that the other 2 parties are taking on local issues that are important to me. |

RE: Am I bovvered? Poll
I've had a couple of tory leaflets, but nothing else. They don't seem to want our votes too much do they? I enjoy seeing them try and answer my questions, and squirming their way out of giving an honest reply.
Maybe Jahovah's Witnesses should run for local government, they're not scared of verbal abuse at the doorstep....... |

seamatt Wrote:3 days to go and I've yet to have anyone knock on my door asking me for my vote and only one piece of party info through my letter box, and the candidates getting as apathetic as the voters? Black Dam (Grove Ward) One Lib/Dem leaflet boasting of some small achievements in the area and warning about the Tory bogey men. Lack lustre from the politicians and the electorate ....... Am I bovvered? about sums it up. Still going to vote though cuz I can and our democracy stands for something even if most ain't bovvered to make it work. The nature of Democracy is the supression of the will of the minority by the majority. What does developed mean - one that is controlled by corporate interests? |

Sam Wrote:Black Dam (Grove Ward) One Lib/Dem leaflet boasting of some small achievements in the area and warning about the Tory bogey men. Buckskin- Endless leafleting by the Labour representatives slagging the conservatives off; but not actually stating what they (labour) would do. Little response from the conservatives only to say that Labour are rubbish. Still not saying what they (conservatives) would do. The main thrust of either parties' campaign would be vote for us because the others are crap. So Flip a coin and let the fates decide..... |
